Synology at IFA 2019: Stand Report and New Product Interviews

Synology is unlikely to introduce itself. And, of course, not a single major exhibition like the IFA could do without the participation of the company. This year we were shown two new NASa, which are already sold, as well as two systems that will go on sale a little later – at the end of this or the beginning of next year. Well, in the end, we managed to ask a few questions about new products for corporate users, as well as find out some details about the upcoming software update from a product manager named Khalil Tulu.

DiskStation DS620slim

DS620slim is a compact NAS with 6 hard drives that looks so stylish that you absolutely don’t want to hide it under a desk or in a drawer. From a technical point of view, this model is suitable for both home users (for streaming video in 4K) and professionals (for uncompromising and quick backup).

DiskStation DS419slim

Next up is the Synology DiskStation DS419slim, a cube-shaped NAS with four hard drive bays that provides shared access and secure file transfer anywhere. It should be noted right away that all the compartments here support hot swapping.

In each of the four bays, you can install a hard drive or SSD up to 5 TB, so the maximum storage capacity is 20 TB. You can buy Synology DiskStation DS419slim right now at a price of about 30,000 rubles.

DS120j

The cloud storage of the initial Synology DS120j has not yet gone on sale and was present at the exhibition in the “behind the glass” mode. You could watch, touch – no.

This is an entry-level personal cloud storage that works with both PC and Mac, as well as with any mobile devices based on iOS and Andriod. A special application will make backups as quick and painless as possible. True, we have not had much of this novelty in action yet, we are expecting it to enter the market at the beginning of next year.

DS420j

The Synology DS420j should go on sale at the same time as the DS120j mentioned above. Here we have a more massive and more ordinary-looking case – you can immediately see that the device is a class higher. The main functions are the storage and transfer of files, as well as backup of various types.

Interview

Product Manager Khalil Tulu from Synology’s German office kindly agreed to answer a few of our questions.

Synology at IFA 2019 stand report and new product interviews

– As we know, Synology actively developing portfolio for corporate users (FS, SA) And which of these decisions are planned in 2019-2020?

– Yes, we really plan to focus more on corporate solutions. We recently announced the FS6400 and SA3400, and by the end of 2019 we will release the UC3200, the first Synology dual-controller device with an active-active architecture that provides continuous iSCSI services and is used only as iSCSI storage, especially for VMware / Hyper V virtualization, Databases, backups, or multi-channel data processing tasks. This model runs on a quad-core Intel Xeon processor with a frequency of up to 2.4 GHz (up to 2.7 GHz in Turbo Boost mode), has 8 GB of RAM per controller, and this amount can be increased up to 64 GB. Plus, the UC3200 is an easily scalable solution, with expansion modules you can achieve a total capacity of up to 576 TB.

– IT-many companies still use Fiber infrastructure Channel, while synology provides solutions only for ISCSi. Are there any plans to implement Fiber support? Channel in new devices?

“In our new DSM 7.0 shell, we will add Fiber Channel support to our systems.” The company pays more and more attention to corporate users and their needs, so we are well aware of the need for FC – users themselves ask about it. But with the release of the new firmware, corporate customers will be able to use our hardware solutions in their FC-based infrastructure. How do they integrate into the finished network? First of all, with the help of PCIe expansion cards and the new SAN Manager application (the successor to ISCSi Manager).

– NAS can be perceived as a breakthrough technology. At first, these devices were used only as network storages, but now they can act as office servers for SMB-companies. What, in your opinion, will be the most attractive in Synology devices c business point of view?

– I think that this is the simplicity and reliability of our solutions, as well as the fact that they can easily be integrated into any IT infrastructure. Separately, I would highlight the Active Backup For Business feature, which supports backing up files and images. In the first case, backup can be done using SMB and Rsync. But all the attention is now directed to figurative backup because in this way we can backup the whole system, and this is exactly what business users want. Active Backup For Business now supports backup of Windows clients and servers, as well as virtual machines on VMware. And soon we will introduce an application update, after which there will be virtual machines from Hyper-V (by the way, this feature is also often requested by business users), as well as Linux and Mac clients and servers. All this will be available at the end of this year. And next year we are going to release Multi Tier Backup with our C2 Cloud, a Synology cloud server for storing backups from NAS. Plus, before the end of 2019, we will launch a special business portal that will give our partners the opportunity to place their backups in the C2 Cloud and make money on it. However, this is a topic for another discussion.

– Since the last major update for DSM a lot of time has passed. When to Expect DSM 7.0 and what new features are expected?
