The reactor of power unit No. 1 of Three Mile Island will be shut down after 45 years of operation. Since the second power unit of the station ceased to function in 1979 after the accident, by and large, the nuclear power plant will simply cease to function. The energy company Exelon did not explain the reasons for the shutdown of the reactor. However, the media write that earlier she announced the high cost of operation.
Exelon also noted that the development of renewable energy has reduced the demand for nuclear energy.
"Whether we like it or not, the industry is moving on – the closure of the station is a symbol of this transition", – added the company representatives.
In the next few weeks, the fuel supply to the reactor will cease, and its complete decommissioning will take many years.
