The ubiquity of the Internet gives us ever greater opportunities for its use. The high speed and quality of data transfer has made it possible such things as video surveillance online. Having acquired a specialized device, we can always keep our apartment, house or garage in sight.
Modern technology makes it possible to conduct surveillance from anywhere in the world
When setting up video surveillance, there is almost always a need for remote access to data transmitted from the camera. In order for the digital video recorder (DVR) to transmit information for its intended purpose – to upload image or video files from the camera to an FTP server, send reports to e-mail or to signal an alarm via SMS – you need to connect it to the Internet. Let’s consider how to implement this scheme using a router.
How to connect the recorder to the Internet
To access the Internet, the DVR connects to the router, like any other end device, receiving from it an IP address and other parameters through an internal DHCP server. The peculiarity lies in the fact that the DVR must be accessible upon appeal from outside this local network.
Setting up access to the DVR from a remote workstation
First of all, you need to find out what type of IP address your network receives from the provider. If a static (that is, permanent) IP address arrives at the router, which is hardcoded in its interface, then you can configure the connection of the DVR as follows:
- On the computer’s network card, specify the local network settings: IP address from the range 192.168.0.X, where X can be any number from 2 to 254, excluding addresses assigned to other devices on this network. Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0. Gateway and DNS values can be left blank.
- Connect the registrar to the router, assign and register in its settings a static IP address from the internal network range – 192.168.0.X. Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0. The gateway and DNS server will be the IP address of the router itself – 192.168.0.1. Port numbers can be left by default.
If the provider assigns a dynamic IP, you will need to contact the technical support of the provider and find out if it is possible to get a static IP. If the answer is no, you will have to use the Dynamic DNS service, which will assign a permanent domain name to your DVR device. By this name, it can be accessed from the outside, despite the changing external IP of your network. To do this, you need to register on any service that provides these services, then register the registration data – server name, host name (of your device), DDNS user name and password – in the corresponding section of the router settings. Using the D-Link DIR-615 as an example, this is done through the Tools tab – Dynamic DNS.
What ports you will need when using the DVR will depend on how you are going to interact with it. You also need to look in the documentation for the device for the port numbers that it uses for different types of access: it can be accessed through a web browser, using special software or viewing cameras from mobile devices.
Using the same D-Link DIR-615 as an example, port translation is performed on the Advanced – Virtual Server tab. You need to activate the corresponding lines with the Enabled checkbox, and then specify:
- The address where to broadcast: in this case it will be the IP address of the DVR or its name if you use DDNS.
- External and internal port numbers: usually they coincide, but if you have more than one DVR, then the value of the external one remains unchanged, and the internal one is registered depending on what number is assigned to it on each specific device.
- The type of protocol is TCP or UDP. If you are not sure which one will be used, leave Both.
Similarly, you configure the forwarding of other ports through which you will access the camera.
Having made the above settings, you can connect your DVR to the Internet through a router and remotely contact it at the address of the form http://126.96.36.199:80 – that is, by specifying the external IP of your network and port number when receiving a static IP. If the provider gives you a dynamic IP, then, accordingly, access will be possible by a domain name of the form mydvr.dvrdns.com, which will provide the Dynamic DNS service.
Thus, knowing the IP address of your network and port numbers on your video surveillance device, you can always access it from anywhere using a router: view cameras online or get a login to your mailbox.
