Good day to all.
I will not be mistaken if I say that there is no such user (with experience) whose computer would never slow down! When this begins to happen often, it becomes uncomfortable to work at the computer (and sometimes even impossible). To be honest, the reasons why a computer can slow down. hundreds, and identify a specific one. is not always a simple matter. In this article I want to focus on the most basic reasons, eliminating which the computer will start to work faster.
By the way, tips and tricks are relevant for PCs and laptops (netbooks) running Windows 7, 8, 10. Some technical terms were omitted for easier understanding and presentation of the article.
What to do if the computer slows down
(a recipe that will make any computer faster!)
1. Reason number 1: a large number of junk files in Windows
Perhaps one of the main reasons because of which Windows and other programs start to run slower than before is because of cluttering the system with various temporary files (they are often called “junk” files), incorrect and old entries in the system registry, from. for the "swollen" browser cache (if you spend a lot of time in them), etc.
To clean all this manually is not a thankful task (therefore, in this article, I will do this manually and will not advise). In my opinion, it is best to use special programs to optimize and speed up Windows (I have a separate article on my blog that contains the best utilities, a link to the article below).
Fig. 1. Advanced SystemCare (link to the program). one of the best utilities for optimizing and speeding up Windows (there is a paid and free version).
2. Reason # 2: problems with drivers
They can cause severe brakes, even computer freezes. Try to install only drivers from the manufacturers’ home sites, update them on time. In this case, it will not be out of place to look into the device manager if exclamation yellow signs (or red) burn there. for sure, these devices are detected and do not work correctly.
To open the device manager, go to the Windows control panel, then turn on the small icons and open the desired manager (see. Fig. 2).
Fig. 2. All elements of the control panel.
In any case, even if there are no exclamation points in the device manager, I recommend checking that there are no updates for your drivers. To find and update thereof, I recommend using the following article:
A good test option would be to boot the computer in safe mode. To do this, after turning on the computer, press the F8 button. until you see a black screen with several options for loading Windows. Of these, select the boot in safe mode.
Help article on how to enter safe mode: https://pcpro100.info/bezopasnyiy-rezhim/
In this mode, the PC will boot up with a minimum set of drivers and programs, without which downloading is not possible at all. Please note that if everything works well and there are no brakes, it can indirectly indicate that the problem is software, and most likely is associated with the software that is in startup (about startup, read the article below, a separate section is devoted to it).
3. Reason # 3: dust
There is dust in every house, in every apartment (somewhere more, somewhere less). And no matter how you clean, over time, the amount of dust in the body of your computer (laptop) accumulates so much that it interferes with normal air circulation, which means it causes an increase in the temperature of the processor, disk, video card, etc. of any devices inside the case.
Fig. 3. An example of a computer that has not been cleaned of dust for a long time.
As a rule, due to a rise in temperature, the computer starts to slow down. Therefore, first of all. check the temperature of all the main devices of the computer. You can use utilities such as Everest (Aida, Speccy, etc., links below), find the sensor tab in them and then look at the results.
I will give a couple of links to my articles that will be needed:
- how to find out the temperature of the main components of a PC (processor, video card, hard drive). https://pcpro100.info/kak-uznat-temperaturu-kompyutera/
- Utilities for determining the characteristics of a PC (including temperature): https://pcpro100.info/harakteristiki-kompyutera/#i
The reasons for the high temperature can be different: dust, or hot weather outside the window, the cooler has broken. To get started, remove the cover of the system unit and check for a lot of dust. Sometimes it is so much that the cooler cannot rotate and provide the necessary cooling to the processor.
To get rid of dust, just vacuum the computer well. You can take it to a balcony or platform, turn on the reverse of the vacuum cleaner and blow all the dust from the inside.

If there is no dust, but the computer heats up anyway. try not to close the unit cover, you can put a regular fan in front of it. Thus, you can survive the hot season with a working computer.

4. Reason # 4: Too many programs in Windows startup
Startup programs. can greatly affect the speed of loading Windows. If after installing "clean" Windows, the computer booted up in 15-30 seconds, and then after some time (after installing all kinds of programs), it began to turn on in 1-2 minutes. The reason is most likely at startup.
over, programs are added “automatically” to the startup program (usually) —that is, no question to the user. The following programs especially affect the download: antivirus, torrent applications, various software for cleaning Windows, graphic and video editors, etc.
To remove an application from startup, you can:
1) use some utility for optimizing Windows (in addition to cleaning, there is also startup startup editing): https://pcpro100.info/luchshie-programmyi-dlya-ochistki-kompyutera-ot-musora/
2) press CTRLSHIFTESC. the task manager starts, select the “Startup” tab in it and then disable unnecessary applications (relevant for Windows 8, 10. see Fig. 4).
Fig. 4. Windows 10: startup in task manager.
In Windows startup, leave only the most necessary programs that you use constantly. Everything that starts from case to case. feel free to delete!
5. Reason 5: viruses and adware
Many users do not even suspect that they already have dozens of viruses on their computer that not only quietly and quietly hide, but also significantly reduce the speed of work.
The same viruses (with a certain caveat) include various advertising modules that are often embedded in the browser and flicker with ads when browsing Internet pages (even on those sites where there has never been an advertisement before). Getting rid of them in the usual way is very difficult (but possible)!
Since this topic is quite extensive, here I want to provide a link to one of my articles, which provides a universal recipe for cleaning all kinds of virus applications (I recommend doing all the recommendations step by step): https://pcpro100.info/kak-ubrat-reklamu- v-brauzere / # i
I also recommend installing one of the antivirus programs on the PC and fully checking the computer (link below).
6. Reason number 6: the computer slows down in games (jerks, friezes, hangs)
A fairly common problem, usually associated with a lack of computer system resources, when they try to launch a new game with high system requirements on it.
The topic of optimization is extensive enough, therefore, if your computer is troublesome in games, I recommend that you read my next articles (they helped to optimize more than one hundred PCs &# 128578; ):
7. Reason No. 7: hstarting a large number of processes and programs
If you run a dozen programs on your computer that are also demanding on resources. whatever your computer is. it will start to slow down. Try not to do 10 simultaneous tasks (resource-intensive!): Encode a video, play a game, simultaneously downloading a file at high speed, etc.
In order to determine which process is heavily loading your computer, press CtrlAltDel at the same time and select the processes tab in the task manager. Next, sort it by the load on the processor. and you will see how much power is spent on a particular application (see. Fig. 5).
Fig. 5. CPU load (Windows 10 task manager).
If the process consumes too many resources, right-click on it and end it. Immediately notice how the computer starts to work faster.
Also pay attention to the fact that if some program constantly slows down. replace it with another one, because you can find a lot of analogs on the network.
Sometimes some programs that you have already closed and that you don’t work with will remain in memory, i.e. the processes of this program are not completed and they consume computer resources. Either restarting the computer or manually closing the program in the task manager helps.
Pay attention to one more moment
If you want to use a new program or game on an old computer, then it is expected that it can start working slowly, even if it passes by the minimum system requirements.
It’s all about the tricks of the developers. The minimum system requirements, as a rule, guarantee only the launch of the application, but not always comfortable work in it. Always look at the recommended system requirements.
If we are talking about a game, pay attention to the video card (about games in more detail. see a little higher in the article). Very often brakes arise precisely because of it. Try lowering your monitor screen resolution. The picture will get worse, but the game will work faster. The same can be applied to other graphical applications.
8. Reason # 8: visual effects
If your computer is not too new and not too fast and you have included various special effects in Windows, then the brakes will certainly appear and the computer will work slowly
To avoid this, you can choose the simplest theme without frills, turn off unnecessary effects.
https://pcpro100.info/oformlenie-windows/. article about the design of Windows 7. With it, you can choose a simple theme, disable effects and gadgets.
https://pcpro100.info/aero/. in Windows 7, the Aero effect is enabled by default. It is better to turn it off if the PC starts to work unstably. The article will help you resolve this issue.
Also, it will not be superfluous to get into the hidden settings of your OS (for Windows 7. here) and change some parameters there. There are special utilities for this called tweakers.
How to automatically set the best performance in Windows
1) First you need to open the Windows control panel, enable small icons and open the system properties (see. Fig. 6).
Fig. 6. All elements of the control panel. Opening system properties.
2) Next, on the left, open the link "Advanced system settings".
3) Then press the “Options” button opposite to the performance (in the “Advanced” tab, as in Fig. 8).

That’s all for me. For additions on the topic of the article. thank you very much in advance. Have a good acceleration &# 128578;
