Complaints about the fact that the Samsung or any other phone is quickly discharging (just smartphones of this brand are more common), the Android eats the battery and it barely lasts for a day everyone has heard more than once and, most likely, they themselves have come across this.
In this article I will give, I hope, useful recommendations on what to do if the Android phone’s battery runs out quickly. I will show examples in the 5th version of the system on Nexus, but all the same is suitable for 4.4 and previous ones, for Samsung, HTC phones and others, except that the path to the settings may differ slightly. You should not expect that the time without charging after following the recommendations will increase many times (the same Android, after all, it really eats up the battery quickly). but they can make the battery discharge less intense. I’ll also note right away that if your phone runs out of power during a game, then there’s nothing you can do here except to purchase a phone with a more capacious battery (or a separate high-capacity battery).
One more note: these recommendations will not help if your battery is damaged: it was swollen due to the use of chargers with the wrong voltage and current, there were physical impacts on it or its resource was simply exhausted.
Mobile and Internet, Wi-Fi and other communication modules
The second, after the screen (and the first when the screen is off), which intensively consumes battery power in the phone, is communication modules. It would seem that here you can customize? However, there are a number of Android communication settings that will help optimize battery consumption.
- 4G LTE. for most regions today you should not turn on mobile communications and 4G Internet, because due to poor reception and constant automatic switching to 3G, your battery lives less. In order to select 3G as the main communication standard used go to Settings. Mobile networks. Also change the type of network.
- Mobile Internet. for many users, mobile Internet is constantly connected to the Android phone, this is not even paid attention to. However, most of them do not need it all this time. To optimize battery consumption, I recommend connecting to the Internet from your service provider only if necessary.
- Bluetooth. it is also better to turn off and turn on the Bluetooth module only if necessary, which in most cases does not occur so often.
- Wi-Fi. just like in the last three paragraphs, you should enable it only when you need it. In addition to this, in the Wi-Fi settings it is better to turn off notifications about the availability of public networks and the option "Always search for networks".
Things like NFC and GPS can also be attributed to communication modules that consume energy, but I decided to describe them in the section on sensors.
The screen is almost always the main consumer of energy on an Android phone or other device. The brighter. the faster the battery discharges. Sometimes it makes sense, especially when indoors, to make it less bright (or let the phone adjust the brightness automatically, although in this case the energy will be spent on the operation of the light sensor). Also, you can save a little by setting less time before the screen turns off automatically.
Recalling Samsung phones, it should be noted that for those that use AMOLED displays, you can reduce energy consumption by setting dark themes and wallpapers: black pixels on such screens almost do not need power.
Sensors and more
Your Android phone is equipped with many sensors that serve a variety of purposes and consume battery. By disabling or restricting their use, you can extend the phone’s battery life.
- GPS is a module for satellite positioning, which some smartphone owners do not really need and are rarely used. You can disable the GPS module through the widget in the notification area or on the Android screen (the “Energy Saving” widget). In addition, I recommend that you go to Settings and in the "Personal Information" section, select "Location" and turn off the sending of location data there.
- Automatic screen rotation. I recommend turning it off, since this function uses a gyroscope / accelerometer, which also consumes a lot of energy. In addition to this, on Android 5 Lolipop, I would recommend disabling the Google Fit application, which also uses these sensors in the background (see below for disabling applications).
- NFC. an increasing number of Android phones are now equipped with NFC communication modules, but there are not so many people actively using them. You can disable it in the “Wireless Networks”. “” settings section.
- Vibration feedback. this does not quite apply to sensors, but I will write about it here. By default, vibration is enabled on Android when you touch the screen, this function is rather energy-consuming, since moving mechanical parts (electric motor) are used. It seems that I forgot nothing on this part. We move on to the next important point. applications and widgets on the screen.
Apps and widgets
The applications launched on the phone, of course, actively use the battery. Which and to what extent you can see if you go to Settings. Battery. Here are some things to watch out for:
- If a large percentage of the discharge falls on a game or other heavy application (camera, for example) that you constantly use. this is quite normal (with the exception of some nuances, we will discuss them later).
- It happens that an application, which, in theory, should not consume a lot of energy (for example, a news reader), on the contrary, is actively eating a battery. this usually indicates crookedly made software, you should think: do you really need it, maybe you should replace it with some or analogue.
- If you use some very cool launcher, with 3D effects and transitions, as well as animated wallpapers, I also recommend thinking about whether the design of the system is sometimes worth a significant battery consumption.
- Widgets, especially those of them that are constantly being updated (or just trying to update, even when there is no Internet) are also good at consuming. Do you need all of them? (My personal experience is that I installed a widget of a foreign technology magazine, he managed to completely discharge it over the phone on the phone with the screen off and the Internet, but this is more to the point about poorly made programs).
- Go to settings. Data transfer and see if all the applications that constantly use data transfer over the network are used by you? Maybe you should delete or disable some of them? If your phone model (such is on Samsung) supports traffic limitation separately for each application, you can use this function.
- Remove unnecessary applications (through the settings. Applications). Also disable there system applications that you don’t use (Press, Google Fit, Presentations, Documents, Google, etc. Just be careful, do not disable the necessary Google services along the way).
- Many applications display notifications that are often not needed. They can also be turned off. To do this, in Android 4, you can use the Settings. - Some applications that actively use the Internet have their own settings for update intervals, enable and disable automatic synchronization, and other options that can help extend the phone’s battery life.
- Do not really use all sorts of task killers and Android cleaners from running programs (or do it wisely). Most of them close everything that is possible to increase the effect (and you are happy with the indicator of free memory that you see), and immediately after that the phone starts to start the processes it needs, but it has just closed. as a result, the battery consumption grows very significantly.
