Update Huawei Mate 9 to Oreo
Expected update date: December 2017
Released with Android 7.0, the Android 8.0 update for Mate 9 will be the first major update that Huawei has decided to use on this device. For obvious reasons, we do not consider 7.1.1 a major update.
Huawei has a successor to the Mate 9, called the Mate 10, which will be released on October 16, 2017 with Android 8.0 preinstalled. It also means that Huawei already has Oreo ready for release, and it is optimized with EMUI 6.0 (Nougat has EMUI 5.0), ready to configure for other devices like Mate 9.
This basically means that Huawei won’t have to work from scratch to come up with an Android 8.0 build for the Mate 9, which will make it easier for them to release OTA in the near future. We will not be surprised to see that the Mate 9 Oreo OTA will be available by the end of October or mid-November.
The successful launch of the beta version of Mate 9 Android 8.0 will be accompanied by the release of a stable version on Oreo, as soon as the bugs and problems found by users in the beta version of update 8.0 are fixed. Therefore, we can expect the Mate 9 to receive an official update by mid-December 2017.
We expect Huawei to begin deploying Oreo in China first. So much so that all tests built under the beta channel will appear only in China, and only when a stable assembly is released in the homeland of Huawei, Mate 9 users in other countries will be able to upgrade their Huawei smartphone to Android 8 Oreo.
Huawei Mate 9 Pro Oreo (also Mate 9 Porsche Edition)
By the way, this is not only a standard Mate 9 with a flat screen, it also applies to the Huawei Mate 9 Pro and the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche edition.
Huawei Mate 9 Lite Oreo
With Huawei mate 9 Lite, a slightly different situation. Mate 9 Lite users will have to wait until the end of the first quarter of 2018 before the Android 8.0 update arrives on their device.
Update [October 02, 2017]: great news! The Android 8.0 update for Mate 9 seems to have leaked to the network. Screenshots of the leaked Mate 9 Oreo software appeared. This is not a downloadable link, but even so, we doubt very much that you will want to install it. Although, with this news, it seems that the beta Mate 9 with Oreo is not very far. Hopefully, Huawei will announce the release of Android 8.0 Oreo beta in a few weeks.
Update [October 07, 2017]: A thorough analysis of the Mate 9 Oreo update, which was merged a few days ago, revealed some new features that can be expected with update 8.0.0. It was discovered that Huawei’s Oreo update comes with EMUI 6.0, which has a new “Screen Resolution” option in the Settings app that will let you choose the device’s resolution. You can reduce it to conserve battery power and thus increase battery life. There was a similar option called smart resolution, but this new option allows you to choose a resolution, rather than let the system automatically adjust it.
Other changes made with EMUI 6.0 include the addition of an additional button on the navigation bar, clicking on which allows you to hide the bar, which remains hidden, and give you a full display to use until you return it, pushing it out from under the display. Huawei also brings a few more gestures with Oreo, and it has been flagged as a navigation dock, allowing you to get a floating button, by scrolling through which we use the navigation bar. Thus, you can get rid of the navigation bar and simply move from the dock button to go to the main screen by swiping your finger over the notification bar, and then swiping left or right to go to the "Browse" screen (recent apps). Not bad!
Update Huawei P10 to Android 8
Expected Release Date: December 2017
Last year, Huawei quickly released the 7.0 OTA for its P9 kits. In the same spirit, we believe that Huawei will not spend much time before it can provide its users with all the features of Oreo. Although there is a good possibility that Huawei will be the first to update the Mate 9, you should not rely heavily on this.
It is very possible that the EMUI 6.0 build, running on top of Android 8.0, will be available for the Huawei P10 and Huawei P10 Plus along with the Mate 9 8.0 OTA or even a few weeks before. In this case, consider that the Mate 9 Oreo update is delayed, and the P10 will receive Oreo earlier than mid-December, which we marked for Mate 9.
In general, the situation will become much clearer as soon as Huawei launches its beta registration program for its EMUI 6.0 update, which will run Oreo under a custom skin. We expect Huawei to present dates for each of its flagship devices when registration begins, including details about the first, second, and third, with more users being added to the Oreo beta with each subsequent beta testing in a typical Huawei style.
It is safe to say that China was the first country where Huawei launched the beta version of Oreo, and makes beta versions available for download.
Huawei P10 Plus Oreo
Well, the older brother of the P10, the Huawei P10 Plus should get Android 8.0 by the time P10 arrives. The launch should be simultaneous for both of these Huawei smartphones, so everything we said above for the P10 also applies to the P10 Plus, which should have its own Oreo beta registration program for the stable software version 8.0.

Oreo update for Honor 9
Expected update date to Android 8 Oreo: January 2018
Honor 9 is a definite candidate for Android Oreo. The device should receive it soon after Huawei completes the deployment of 8.0 for the Mate 9 and Huawei P10 kits.
An Oreo beta update for Honor could appear on November 9th, which could take a month of testing.
After updating the Oreo beta with any issues found during testing, Huawei will release a stable version of its Oreo update for all users around the world in January 2018.
Android 8 update for Honor 8
Expected update date to Oreo: beginning of the second quarter of 2018
Huawei did not release 7.0 for Honor 8 very quickly, but unlike Samsung, it was not very late.
Expect Huawei to release the Honor 8 Oreo in the second quarter of 2018.
Honor 8 Pro
The Honor 8 pro runs on a different processor than Honor 8, and this required a new Oreo update job, supported by EMUI 6.0, which Huawei will release for the device. Its Oreo launch time should be around the same time as the Honor 8.
Honor 8 Lite
Expect Android 8.0 support to start with the Honor 8 and 8 Pro, and then the Honor 8 Lite, which will see the version of Android 8.0 along with the Nova series of phones.
Huawei Nova 2
Expected update date to Android 8.0: Q2 2018
Huawei Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus are quite popular in some regions.
We expect Huawei to launch the Nova 2 Oreo update in the second quarter of 2018. We do not think that Huawei will have a beta version for Nova 2, since by that time they will have successfully released the EMUI 6.0 update from Oreo for many of the devices mentioned above.
Thus, Huawei has already fixed small bugs that could become part of the original Oreo releases, and will be able to directly bring Android 8.0 for Nova 2 to a stable channel. It is also useful for users who may be confused by the genuine release of the update when it removes the beta for selected users.
Huawei Nova 2 Plus
Nova 2 Plus is due to receive its 8.0 OS software in the second quarter of 2018. This may seem belated, but given Huawei’s large portfolio of devices, it’s easy to imagine that this is true. Take, for example, Samsung, whose Galaxy J, A, and C series smartphones are still in the process of receiving the Nougat update, even when Oreo is missing.
Huawei Nova 2 Lite
Expect Nova 2 Lite Android smartphones around the world to taste the update for Android 8.0 in the second quarter of 2018 or the beginning of the third quarter of 2018.
Oreo update for Huawei P9
Expected update date to Oreo: Q2 2018
Huawei P9 was one of the few devices among hundreds of Android devices that were provided with 7.0 OTA. Although many things have changed over the course of the year, with the release of the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus, the P9 series will take a step backward in terms of the fastest version of Android OS.
Support for Android 8.0 for Huawei P9 should arrive, but it will not be so soon. Huawei has a bunch of devices as part of its Oreo roadmap, for which it would prefer to deploy 8.0 OTA, for example, Mate 9, P10 and P10 Plus, Honor 9, etc.
The time when Huawei can prepare and release build 8.0 for P9, we think it will be April-May 2018. Thus, the second quarter of 2018 seems like a good guess at the moment, until Huawei officially presents its Oreo plans, which will give much better picture.
Huawei P9 Plus
P9 Plus users will have to wait for Oreo support. Huawei Oreo has a large number of devices in the line of the leading roadmap for updating Huawei Oreo, and 8.0 for P9 Plus will take some time. As stated above for P9, expect Huawei to release Android 8.0 for P9 Plus at the beginning of the second quarter of 2018.
Huawei P9 Lite and Huawei P9 Lite Mini
We need to wait for official confirmation from Huawei that they plan to release Android 8.0 for the P9 Lite and P9 Lite Mini. Since these are low-end devices that usually receive only one major software update, which the two already had as Nougat, most likely the P9 Lite and P9 Lite Mini will not receive the Oreo update.
Android 8 Oreo update for Huawei P8
Estimated release date: cannot be updated.
Huawei succeeded in updating the software on the Huawei P8 to Android 7.0 Nougat in a timely manner, but when it comes to Oreo for P8, the time for the device is over.
We really do not expect Huawei or any other OEM, for that matter, to upgrade any of its 2015 devices to Oreo.
If Huawei does not confirm that it plans to release Android 8.0 for P8, we believe that P8 users will have to live with Nougat as the latest Android OS update.
Huawei P8 Lite
P8 Lite was also launched in 2015 and, therefore, like the P8 itself, is not a candidate for Oreo.
Oreo update for Huawei Honor 7X
Expected Release Date: Q2 2018
The company announced the release of its Honor 7X phone in China on October 11th. The device is running preloaded with Android 7.1.1, but that’s fine, although we know that they plan to release Mate 10 (the flagship device) on October 16 with Android 8.0 on board.
Although, expect Huawei to provide a timely update for Android 8.0 to Honor 7X. Since the Honor 7X is a low-cost device in the Huawei portfolio, its Oreo will not be a priority, like the Mate 9, P10, Honor 8, etc.
However, despite this, the Honor 7X should get the version of Android 8.0.0 in the second quarter of 2018.
Android 8 update for Huawei Honor 6X
Expected release date: cannot be updated / Q3 2018
The Honor 6X, released with Android 6.0.1 on board, received the first major upgrade to Android 7.0. Android devices in the price range where the Honor 6X is sold usually do not receive the two main Android OS updates.
Therefore, we will not be surprised if Huawei does not release Android 8.0 for Honor 6X. But in case they do, it will be amazing.
The release of Oreo for the Honor 6X will also give potential buyers of the Honor 7X the confidence that their purchase will also see the Android P, which is due to be released by Google in October 2018.
In case Huawei releases Oreo for Honor 6X, expect it to face your 6X in the third quarter of 2018.
Huawei Y3, Y5 and Y7 Oreo
The Huawei Y series, consisting of Y3, Y5 and Y7 phones, is designed for the budget smartphone market. Android devices not only from Huawei, but also any other Android OEM, actually include the transition to a new version.
The above is precisely why we are not sure that Y3 and Y5 and y7 are eligible to upgrade Oreo. In the best case, we think that only the Y7 2017 version can see the update to Android 8.0. Yes, we do not think that even the entire version of 2017 in the Y series will receive support for 8.0.
In general, although Huawei Y7 2017 may turn out Oreo, Y3 2017, Y3 II, Y5 2017, Y5 II, Y6, Y6 II Compact, Y7 Prime, etc., do not look suitable for Android 8.0.
How Android 8.0 Oreo update will be released for Huawei smartphones
Huawei also uses beta for its major Android releases. So expect the company to announce its Oreo beta registration program as soon as they are done with the release of Mate 10, which they should be focusing on right now, as the release will happen in just a few weeks.
They must first release the Oreo update in China, which may be the only country in which they will also announce a beta program. Only for devices such as Nova 2 Lite or Huawei P9 Lite and other devices that are country specific since their launch, they can initiate a beta program in these specific countries.
Huawei EMUI 6.0 update: what is it?
EMUI. This is the name of the custom shell from Huawei. Like Samsung Experience, or Xiaomi MIUI, Huawei calls it setting up for Android.
With Nougat, EMUI reached its version 5.0, which was a big improvement over EMUI 4.0, and it was praised for reducing unnecessary things that were not required, and the ease of aesthetics and use.
The EMUI 6.0, which is Huawei’s designer fork compared to Android 8.0 Oreo, is expected to be launched with Mate 10. We expect Huawei to make setup even easier and make its EMUI even easier to use.
New features in EMUI 6.0?
Huawei has not yet announced its EMUI 6.0, but with the launch of Mate 10, scheduled for October 16, it should happen soon.
