The 7210. This is Nokia’s first attempt at color screen phones. Until now, only SonyEricsson and Samsung have presented similar models, but now the market leader has entered the race to gain audience sympathy. The device logically continues the current line, while it is experimental or, better to say, innovative. This is evidenced by his number, because historically 7 series. These are innovative models. In reality, there are not so many innovations except for the color screen, but they are. But let’s look at the capabilities of the phone in order.
The device is available in three colors: blue, orange and brown (Turquoise, Orange, and Brown).
With Xpress-on ™ interchangeable panels, you can change the look of your phone with a total of 6 (Black, Red, Pink, Green Gray, Maroon and Yellow). In order to change the panel, it is necessary to unfasten the back cover, and only then remove the front panel. You can see the holder on the back of the case, you need to slide it and remove the cover with your second hand. The task is not simple, the cover is removed with difficulty, too tightly fits to the body. By the difficulty of removing the back cover, this device compares with the first Nokia 3310.
The dimensions of the phone (106 x 45 x 17.5 mm) are not large; it fits well in a shirt pocket or front pocket of trousers. At the same time, the phone weighs 83 grams, which is quite a bit. In many ways, weight reduction was achieved through the use of a new type of battery, namely BLD-3. This is a 720 mAh lithium-ion battery. According to the manufacturer, it is able to provide standby time of the phone up to 300 hours, talk time up to 5 hours. Under the conditions of the Beeline Moscow network, the telephone worked on average for about 4 days with 45-60 minutes of calls. Additional functions of the device were used minimally, but if you use the organizer, games, as well as an alarm clock (up to 50 minutes), then the working time with the same number of calls will be reduced to 3 days. This is a very good result, especially if you take into account the presence of a color display. It takes about 1.5 hours to fully charge the battery.
The screen displays up to 4096 colors, has a resolution of 128×128 pixels. In normal modes, most menus display up to 5 lines of text and a service line. When typing short messages, up to 8 lines of text are added to two service lines, this is achieved by scaling. The phone is not bad in terms of colors, in the sun, the information fades, but it is still possible to read the contents of the display. In the conditions of artificial lighting there are no problems at all. The screen can be compared with that used on the Nokia 7650, only the sizes differ.
Under the screen you can see the keyboard, it is made of plastic. The shape and location of the keys are dictated, first of all, by design findings, the phone looks unusual. But not always style means convenience, and in this case. The lower rows of keys are too crowded, and the side keys opposite are very spaced. It’s certainly possible to get used to this arrangement, but you won’t be able to dial into the blind. Perhaps the keyboard is the most controversial place in the device, so immediately I hasten to say that my feelings are extremely subjective. It is possible that you, on the contrary, will like the keyboard (fortunately, the anatomy of everyone is different). The backlighting of the keys is uneven, so on the buttons 1, 3 and 4 the signs are not visible in the conditions of average illumination.
On the left side surface is a paired volume button, it is also made of plastic. To press it, you have to make an effort, it is not easy to press it. Apparently, this was done with the intention that the key is not pressed accidentally, there is no other explanation.
At the top of the phone is the on / off key, to the left of the IR port window. At the bottom end there is an interface connector, for the first time it was in 7210 that Pop-port was used. Future models will use this interface connector. Its advantages are that it automatically identifies plug-in accessories. Support for stereo sound is initially built into the connector, which allows you to use stereo headphones (they are included with 7210). Through the system connector, you can supply power to external accessories, which eliminates the need to provide them with a separate power source. Finally, the connector supports high data transfer rates (up to 230 Kbps). As an optional accessory, the 7210 comes with a USB data cable, it already belongs to the new line of accessories. The new interface connector has many advantages, the only minus is that the owners of accessories from older models will have to update them.

The organization of the menu in 7210 has not changed compared to other Nokia phones, only the main menu icons have changed, and the number of items has expanded. There is a quick navigation using digital sequences. Now the number of items in the main menu is 13, and it’s easier to travel through the menu using quick sequences; scrolling takes too much time.
Phone book. The phonebook features are traditional and comparable to models such as the Nokia 6310, 8910, etc. For one name, you can enter 3 phones and one text field. The memory is allocated dynamically. This means that with less than 300 names, you can save up to 5 numbers and 4 text fields for one name. There are groups of subscribers.
You can simultaneously view the memory of both the SIM card and the phone. There is a function of copying numbers from the SIM card to the memory and vice versa.
Messages. The device can receive and send connected messages (up to 459 characters), of course, which is supported by Nokia Smart Messaging. Initially, 10 small graphic images were installed in the telephone memory for messages. There are message templates. When typing, you can use predictive text input. There is also a Chat function.
interestingly, the device is able to receive and send MMS messages. Especially for these purposes, graphic images and sounds are added to the phone’s memory, you can also download them additionally from the Nokia website (while the service is unavailable). This is the second phone (not a smartphone) after SonyEricsson T68i with support for this function.
Up to 150 short messages and up to 50 graphic messages can be stored in the phone’s memory, free memory is allocated for MMS messages, it is also used to store Java programs, sounds, ringtones, and graphics. Initially, the phone has about 500 KB of free memory.
Call lists. Traditional lists of received, made and missed calls, indicating the date and time. Each list contains up to 10 numbers. There is also a calculation of the cost of calls and their duration.
Profiles. There is also nothing unusual, profiles can be temporarily activated until a certain time, you can make all the settings to your taste.
Setting. Of the new settings, it is worth noting the possibility of installing a screen saver in the form of a digital clock, you can also select a wallpaper for the screen, it can be one of the graphic files. Plus, the user himself can assign the color scheme of the menu, 11 schemes are available.
There is an automatic key lock.
Well, finally, you can choose here the option of vibration and call. In reality, these parameters are more logical to configure through the profiles menu. The classic settings are also concentrated in this menu.
Alarm clock. A simple alarm clock that you can set only for a specific time.
Radio. The phone has an FM radio, it is stereo, as the Pop-port supports stereo output. Headphones included. In its capabilities, the radio is similar to that of the Nokia 8310, 6510.
Gallery. That’s how plainly the developers called the menu, which contains all the graphic and sound files. There are also settings for access to the service for downloading new files (wap). You can create your own folders.
Organizer. This function is performed in the same way as on other models, for example Nokia 6510. You can save from 100 to 500 entries in the memory, it all depends on their length, there is an automatic deletion of old entries (based on time). You can view the calendar for a month, there is a quick transition to the entered date.
In the to-do list, you can create tasks, specify a deadline for them. Everything is quite simple.
Games. Initially, the phone has two games already familiar to us from the Nokia 9210, these are Tripple Pop and Bounce. Let me remind you that this is a Java application.
Applications. Here you can find installed Java programs. There are two of them in the standard package, Dictionary and Converter. Unfortunately, in my sample the first application was not, so I can not evaluate it. The converter allows you to convert centimeters to feet, kilograms to pounds, etc. We have already seen this application in other models.
Extra. Again, the standard gentleman’s set of calculator, countdown timer, stopwatch (split, lap time, plus the ability to save results).
Connectivity. Settings for packet data transmission and the inclusion of an infrared port. Also, everything is clear, nothing complicated or new here, everything works.
Services. Behind this item is a wap browser version 1.2.1.
In terms of communication quality, this is a typical representative of the Nokia family, there are no failures or ups, verified quality. The sound in the speaker is live, the maximum volume is sometimes excessive, you can remove a couple of divisions. The phone has a built-in speakerphone, of course, that the speaker volume in this case is not very high. This function can be used in a quiet environment, on the street or in a public place it is not applicable, the conversation will clog with extraneous noise.
The phone has a polyphonic 4-tone call, with up to 43 instruments supported. That is, in its characteristics, it is completely similar to that of the Nokia 3510. The call volume is almost always insufficient in noisy city streets, polyphony is poorly distinguishable in extraneous sounds. You can listen to the polyphonic calls of this device here.
The vibration alert does not correct the situation; it is also rather weak; it is difficult to feel it from the pocket of the jacket; you need to carry the phone on yourself. Unfortunately, according to these parameters, 7210 is inferior to other Nokia devices, of course, it will not work to miss a call, but for some time you will have to listen to whether your phone rings or not.
The device has neither voice dialing, nor voice recorder, nor bluetooth. The manufacturer considered that the presence of a color screen in itself would attract buyers.
The phone will go on sale in late September or early October; its retail price in Europe will be about 500, as practice shows a little more. Is it worth it to pay such an amount for a color display is not clear, because in fact there are no other functions. Of course, color diversifies life, makes using the phone more enjoyable. Interestingly, it is with this model that we can observe a departure from the traditional segmentation of models. If at the beginning of the material we talked about the fact that Nokia 7210 is in the class of innovative models, now you can open the curtain of secrecy, this device is positioned as a fashion. That is, this is a continuation of such models as Nokia 8210, 8310. It turns out that already now we are witnessing a change in positioning strategy, Nokia is moving away from its own interpretation. This can also be confirmed by the appearance of the Nokia 6610 model, which is an almost complete nugget from 7210, only small things differ, while 6610 is positioned in the Classic segment.
At the time of its appearance, the Nokia 7210 will, in fact, compete only with the SonyEricsson T68i, which it will play functionally, but at the same time have the best screen and polyphony. And since this is a fashion device, it will be sold well, because users of this category are often not very interested in additional features.
Thanks to Nokia for providing the phone.
