This article describes what to do when problems arise with the display or if the touch screen does not respond to touch.

The display does not respond to touch

If the entire or part of the display does not respond to touch, you may need to force reboot the device. Follow the steps below.

  • On iPad models with Face ID: press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Press the top button and hold until the device restarts.
  • On iPhone 8 or later: press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • On iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold the top (or side) button and volume down button until the Apple logo appears.
  • On an iPad with a Home button, iPhone 6s or earlier and iPod touch (6th generation) or earlier: Press and hold the side (or top) button and Home button until the Apple logo appears.

If the display still does not respond to contact, contact Apple Support.

The display is too sensitive or does not always respond to touch

If the display is too sensitive or does not respond to touch properly:

  1. Restart your device.
  2. Make sure that the device’s screen is clean and free from dirt or water droplets.
  3. Disconnect your Lightning or USB-C accessories.
  4. Remove the case and the protective film.
